Dane Chapel Obituary

Dane Scott Chapel, 68, of Boyne City passed away on Sunday November 7th, 2021 at Boulder Park Terrace in Charlevoix with his loving son and wife by his side.

He was born August 19th, 1953 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Darrell and Vonda Chapel. He was the oldest of three children. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at a radar station in Bay Shore, Michigan with Detachment 6: 1st Combat Evaluation Group, Strategic Air Command. He later deployed to Thailand and Laos during Vietnam. He earned a 4th Dan black belt in Goju Ryu Karate and taught martial arts in Boyne City in the 1980’s. He married Jayne Byrne in 1978 and they had son, Derek Chapel. He attended the University of Michigan and later worked, and retired from, Smiths Aerospace as an electrical engineer. He married Donna Lehto of Boyne City in 2003. He enjoyed dancing, movies, watching football and baseball, spending time with family and friends, fishing, boating, and always was an amazing story teller. He particularly enjoyed telling stories from his Bay Shore Bombplot and martial arts days. He had an infectious laugh and was a friend to everybody. He is proceeded in death by parents Darrell and Vonda.

He is survived by his sisters Jammie Martz-Reed and Sandy Rauch; his son Derek Chapel; his wife Donna Chapel (Lehto); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dane chose to be cremated with no public memorial service at this time. If you desire to do something in memory of Dane, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, National Kidney Foundation, or any charitable organization of your choice in his name.
