Daniel Anthony Tosch, 84, of Boyne City, Michigan, passed away on September 10, 2025, at his home surrounded by family. Son of John and Eleanor (Denby) Tosch, Dan was born on July 10, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan.
Dan was referred to as a “rock” by family, friends, and coworkers alike. Through his quiet and unwavering support, Dan provided guidance, balance, and a solid foundation for loved ones to feel secure and loved.
There was no one in his world that Dan supported or cherished more than the love of his life – Sharon Tosch. After meeting in high school on a blind date, Dan and Sharon were married on November 21, 1965, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Detroit, Michigan.
Dan and Sharon were the proud parents of two children, Jenny and Danny. Dan never missed a sporting event – whether in the steamy bleachers of the high school pool or a frigid hillside for a ski meet. After his kids grew up and formed families of their own, Dan relished in his role as “Papa”, always at the ready with sweets, the toss of a ball, or a gentle squeeze.
In his younger years, Dan attended and graduated from De La Salle Catholic School in Detroit and then the University of Detroit, where he earned his architecture degree.
While completing his architecture degree, Dan served in the ROTC and, upon graduation, was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve as an Ordnance Officer. He served with distinction during the Vietnam War era from 1965 to 1971, achieving the rank of First Lieutenant, and was honored with the Bronze Star Medal for his exceptional service.
Once relieved of active duty, Dan returned to Michigan and bought an architecture firm named Progressive Associates, Inc., which he owned and operated for more than 50 years, not retiring until age 80. Dan leaves behind an unsurpassed legacy and portfolio across Michigan and neighboring states. It is impossible to drive through southeastern Michigan, Grand Rapids, or northern Michigan without seeing one of his projects.
In his spare time, Dan was an active member of Bayview Yacht Club and spent many hours sailing on Lake St. Clair and participating in numerous Port Huron to Mackinac races. He also enjoyed golfing with friends, spending time with family in northern Michigan, and would never tire of watching any Detroit sports – good or bad.
Dan is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Kathleen) LaTosch; son, Dan (Erica) Tosch; grandchildren, Donovan, Quinn, Finn, and Ruby; and many nieces and nephews. Dan is preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Tosch; parents, John and Eleanor Tosch; grandson Connor; sister Sharron Schobloher; and brother John Tosch.
Those wishing to make a charitable donation in Dan’s memory are asked to consider the Michigan Parkinson’s Foundation.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to honor Dan with close family and friends.
Arrangements are in the care of Stackus Funeral Home, Boyne City, Michigan.
