David A. Jewell

David Arthur Jewell, age 90 of Mackinaw City, Michigan passed away peacefully on September 20, 2022.

David was born on September 17, 1932 in Cheboygan, Michigan to parents Robert and Helen Jewell.  He attended Cheboygan Elementary School until a fire destroyed their family home in Cheboygan relocating the family to Mackinaw City.   After graduation from Mackinaw City High School, David enlisted in the US Army in 1952, began his training at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas and was stationed in Germany for four years.  He then returned to Mackinaw City and began a lifelong career in road construction throughout the state retiring from the Teamsters Union.  Upon retirement, he embarked on a seasonal job with Shepler’s Car Care Center for several summer seasons.

David married Celeste Ranville in 1970 and made their home in Mackinaw City.  His job took him away from home much of the year but once winter began, he could be found daily on the frozen Burt Lake doing his favorite past time, ice fishing.  In his later years he developed a like for plowing snow, walking and going to the bakery during the summer.   David and Celeste took many daily rides around the area and, although he was not Catholic, he escorted her to St. Anthony’s of Padua every Sunday.   He spent many hours in front of the television watching his favorite Detroit Tigers play.

David was a member of the American Legion Post 149 and for years was a very active member along with creating many memories with family and friends at the club.

David was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers Robert and Fred Jewell, and several sister-in-law’s, brother-in-law’s, nephews and one great nephew. Survivors include his sister Mary Ellen (Jewell) Burke, sister-in-law Arlene Jewell, brother-in-law’s; Bill Baumann and Rick Clark, several nieces, nephews and their families.

A graveside service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery, Mackinaw City, MI on October 01, 2022 at 11:00 am.
