Don was born in Beaugrand Township October 28, 1930 on the family farm. He graduated from St. Charles Catholic High School in 1949.  Donald served in the Air Force as a corporal from September 1950 to February 1952.  Don's final duty station was at Amarillo Air Force Base in Texas.  He married Janice Borowicz at Sacred Heart Parish on August 3, 1957. Don enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing with his family. Another source of enjoyment was getting together with friends to play cards and the bus trips taken with his wife and friends.

During his lifetime, he worked many jobs including typewriter repairman, hardware store clerk, and he owned and operated the Cheboygan Locker & Meat Processing Plant. When the locker plant closed down, Don worked for the City of Cheboygan and retired December of 1993.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Anna (Rocheleau) VanSlembrouck, his brother Allen VanSlembrouck, and sisters Alice Galbraith, Lucille Vogel and Elda Weber.

Survivors include his wife Janice of 63 years, two daughters Lauri (Brian) Fritz of Naples Florida, Lisa (David) Beckwith of Traverse City, and two sons Joel and Jeff of Cheboygan. His surviving grandchildren include granddaughter Andrea (Josh) Harris of Kodiak Alaska, grandson Kyle (Jordin) Beckwith and granddaughter Ashley Bembeneck of Traverse CIty. He enjoyed his great grandsons Connor and Caleb Harris and great granddaughters Emma and Elizabeth Harris of Kodiak Alaska. Don is also survived by his sisters Anna Smith of Cheboygan and Theresa (Wendel) Brunner of Fremont Nebraska, and several nieces and nephews.
