Dorothy Thompson Obituary

Dorothy Jean (Inman) Thompson, age 76, passed away on July 29th, 2022, at her home in Boyne City, Michigan.  She was surrounded by family and beloved friends during the course of a prolonged illness, and joined her heavenly family this past Friday.

Dorothy was the eldest child born to parents William Charles Inman and Betty Arlene (Smith) Inman on August 3rd, 1945.  She was born in Chico, California where her father had been based while serving our country during WWII. Her family relocated to northern Michigan just before Dorothy's first birthday, and she attended elementary school in Johannesburg, before moving and attending Boyne City Public Schools for her middle and highschool years.  She earned her diploma in 1963.

Dorothy married her high school sweetheart, Verlin Derryl Thompson, in January of 1963.  She devoted herself fully to being a kind, loving wife and mother of four, tirelessly providing comfort and love to family and friends. She held straight the line on what is right and wrong.

Dorothy worked at Honeywell Aerospace for more than 20 years, where she is remembered as a soft-spoken, nurturing friend to many.  She was tender -hearted and showed a kind disposition towards others, and had a ready smile and a sparkling sense of humor.  She loved cooking and taking care of others; she was a member of Walloon Lake Community Church, regularly attending services, Bible study classes, prayer meetings, picnics, and chauffeuring kids, grandkids, and friends to Wednesday night kids clubs and Bible Summer Camp until her illness progressed beyond her ability to attend.  Always a voracious reader,  Dorothy loved books, especially history, historical and classical novels, and inspirational stories and some political fare. She loved to learn new things and to visit with friends and family.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Charles (known as Bill) and Betty Inman as well as her three brothers, Paul William Inman, who died in childhood,  and in more recent years brothers Ronald Ward and Peter William (twin brother to Paul) Inman.  She is survived by husband of 59 years, Verlin Derryl Thompson;. Four children, Darryl Paul Thompson, along with his wife Marcie (Morris) Thompson;. Sharon Arlene (Thompson) McGeorge, as well as her husband, Greg McGeorge; Lisa Ann (Thompson) Leist, and former husband Damien Leist, and Suzanne Lynn Thompson, along with her husband Kerry (Moore) Thompson.  Sister, Kathryn Rice and her husband, Jim.  Also surviving are her grandchildren, Andrew McGeorge, Justin McGeorge, Charissa Thompson, Brandon McGeorge, Nicolas McGeorge, Celestia McGeorge, along with her fiance, Forrest Dixon; Samantha (Thompson) Wyse and her husband, Josiah; William Thompson; Christian Thompson, Gabriel Leist, Caitlyn Thompson,  Jackie Thompson, and Benjamin Thompson.  Great -grandchildren are Braedyn Dibble and Wesley McGeorge.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 from 6-8pm at the Stackus Funeral Home and again on Thursday, August 4th from 10-11am at the Walloon Lake Community Church.  Funeral services celebrating Dorothy’s life will follow the visitation at the church at 11am.  Burial will be in the Maple Lawn Cemetery in Boyne City.
