Douglas Stewart Povenz, 88, of Harbor Springs passed away peacefully October 1, 2021, at his home surrounded by his loving wife and family. Douglas was born August 28, 1933, in Highland Park, Michigan, the son of Walter A. and Helen W. Povenz.
Douglas was a graduate of Port Huron High School and the University of Michigan where he met the love of his life, Ann Nicholson Hess. They were married in Flint, Michigan on July 28,1956. Subsequently, Douglas served in the Air Force ( Second Lieutenant), based at a radar site in Alaska. He and Ann were long time residents of Port Huron, Michigan, where he was an owner and President, for over twenty years, of Moore, Povenz, Wilbrett, and Marsh; an Insurance Agency. He served on the Board of Directors of Citizens Federal Savings in Port Huron for 24 years, the last five as Chairman of the Board. He is also a Past President of Port Huron Golf Club and was a member of many civic organizations; to include the Port Huron Hospital and School Board of Directors as well as the Kiwanis Club.
He and Ann retired to Harbor Springs, Michigan, and were members and residents of Birchwood Farms Golf and Country Club. They also wintered in Bonita Springs, Florida and were members of Shadow Wood Country Club for a number of years. Douglas was an avid golfer, having started the game at the age of twelve. He won several club and invitational championships, taking considerable pride in having shot his age 277 times. He also played with The American Seniors Invitational Team in Brussels, Belgium two times. He loved music and liked to dance.
Douglas was preceded in death by his parents; Walter and Helen, and his sister Jacqueline (Wood). He is survived by his wife, Ann; son and daughter in law, William and Stacey Povenz of Athens, Georgia, and daughter and son in law, Catherine and David White of Harbor Springs, Michigan, and five grandchildren; Alex, Alison Faust (Eric), David White Jr.(Hillary), Drew, and Megan.
A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution are directed to the First Tee of Northern Michigan and the IPF Foundation.
