Douglas J. Schlappi

Douglas J. Schlappi, 69 of Harbor Springs, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2020 at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Doug’s family will remember and celebrate his life at his home, (2487 S. State Rd., Harbor Springs, MI 49740) on Saturday, August 15th at 2:00 p.m.  His family will begin receiving friends at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Friendship Township Cemetery.  For those planning on attending the service, you are encouraged to bring a lawn chair for your comfort.

Doug was born September 9, 1950 in Petoskey to Forrest and Lula (Hickman) Schlappi. On July 17, 1971, he married Jean Fisher. They made their home in Harbor Springs and enjoyed 49 years of marriage.  Throughout his working years he found employment as both a long-hall semi driver and as a mechanic.  He loved working with his hands, rarely finding a task that was beyond his skills.  He was an incredibly gregarious and outgoing guy with a ready smile who made friends easily.  Doug thoroughly enjoyed his retirement which allowed him time to be a school bus driver taking students to and from school and various athletic events. He loved farming, hunting and teaching Hunter’s Safety; and loved few things more than sharing those interests with his grandchildren.

Doug is survived by his wife Jean, 3 children John (Tonya Kruger) Schlappi of Levering, Andrea Schlappi and Jeffrey Schlappi both of Harbor Springs; 9 grandchildren, Douglas and Dennis Nixon, Tyler Bellmer, Trisha and Minnie Nixon, Chance, MacKenzee, Brinlinn and Owen Schlappi; and 6 brothers and sisters, Virginia (Robert) Beair, Rosetta (Joel) Stanley, twin sister, Diana (Glenn) Peebles, Donald (Mary Kay) Schlappi, Ronald Schlappi and Timothy Schlappi and his beloved dog Jack.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert, Forrest “Dick” and Charles and his sister Ethel Knepp.
