Duane Edwin Newstead, age 87, of Alanson, Michigan, died February 23, 2026, at home surrounded by his family and his cat Badger.
Duane was born in Traverse City, Michigan, on June 5, 1938. He’s the son of James Edwin Newstead and Erma Maxine Totten.
Duane honorably served in the Navy from 1956 to 1957. He worked hard all his life and retired in 2006. He loved to fish, hunt and trap. He would spend countless hours out on the lake with his grandchildren. Teaching them all to fish. He has chartered fishing boats. He was very talented at creating things with his hands.
He has rebuilt model T cars. Made hand crafted guns, bows, arrows, fishing poles and lures. He built his house he has lived in for the past 31 years. He was good at welding, masonry, flint knapping, leatherwork, tanning hides, taxidermy, carpentry, milling, and scavenging.
He was survived by his devoted wife and soul mate, Janice Marie Newstead. His children; Raymond (Dawn) Shenoskey of Charlevoix Mi, Sherry Shenoskey of Charlevoix, Mi, Pamela (Sterling) Reid of Campobello,Sc, Autumn Newstead of Charlevoix, Mi, Duane James of Alanson, Mi. Grandchildren; Alan (Samantha)Newstead, Christine (Adam) Wurm, Raymond Shenoskey, Leroy Shenoskey, Steven Russell, Mary Zipp, Brandon Zipp, Nathan (Cora) Newstead, Evan (Belle) Winegar, Sterling Reid, Journey Reid, Ashley (Chandler) Cone, Emily King, Evelyn Manker, and Landen Newstead. Great Grand children; Parker & Carly Newstead, Linda Finch, Thomas Newstead, and Berkley Cone.
He was preceded in death by his parents James and Erma Newstead, son Martin Newstead, granddaughter Stephanie Russell, siblings; Clarisa Maridine, Lois, Linda, Janet, Avonda, and James.
A casual gathering of family and friends sharing their memories will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Friday, February 27, 2026, at Stone Funeral Home, Inc with a time of sharing beginning at 6:30pm.
