Edwin "Ed" Stolt Obituary

On Saturday, March 18, 2023, Edwin Albert “Ed” Stolt, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away in his home at age 87.

Ed was born on June 13, 1935, the son of Albert and Ethel (Whitaker) Stolt.  Albert died when Ed was an infant, and Ethel remarried Lloyd Fisher, the man that Ed considered his dad.   Ed graduated from Harbor Springs High School in 1953 and attended Alma College before enlisting in the US Marine Corps, where he proudly served his country until receiving his honorable discharge at the rank of Sergeant.

On August 27, 1960, Ed married Rosemary VanBaarle of Harbor Springs. They raised two daughters while renovating the house Ed was born in. Between Ed’s finish carpentry skills and Rosemary’s artistic talents, the place became both an evolving reflection of them and their lifelong home.

Edwin’s career with woodworking also began in the early ‘60’s under the tutelage of his father, Lloyd. While he officially retired from Walstrom Marine in the late ‘90’s, he perpetually had projects going in his wood shop, and delighted in crafting beautiful pieces to give to friends and family.

Ed loved the great outdoors, playing golf (BOPS), cross-country skiing, swimming, cutting wood, and especially spending time with “the crew”. He was an avid reader and quite a grill-master. Ed was an easygoing, social man; quick with a smile and to offer a hand. He loved music and sang beautifully, whether in a choir or solo.

Ed was an elder at Harbor Springs First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed many trips to the UP with the Petoskey Hunting Club, not hunting but cooking for the guys. Ed’s greatest joy was his family and loved spending time with his wife, daughters, and granddaughters.  He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by Rosemary, his wife of 62 years; daughters, Sheila Haen of Grand Rapids and Felicia Norman of Ramona, CA; granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Emily Haen; sister, Allene Long of Grand Rapids; nieces and nephews, Christopher Long, Barry Long, Melissa Seabra, and Camilla Martin; and by many great nieces and nephews.

Ed was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Duane Norman.

The family will receive friends at the First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Springs on Friday, March 24th beginning at 10 am. Services celebrating Ed’s life will be held immediately following the visitation at the church at 11 am.
