Eleanor E. Stackus, age 83 of Boyne City passed away Monday, January 5, 2026 at Grandvue Medical Care Facility.
A funeral mass for Eleanor will be held 11:00 am, Thursday, January 8, 2026 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Boyne City with a visitation being held from 10:00 am until the time of service. Burial will be held at Maple Lawn Cemetery in the spring.
Eleanor was born a twin with her brother Bo to Edward and Cleo (Kent) Hosmer. She attended school in Boyne City graduating in 1960. She married her husband, James D Stackus on June 17, 1961. James was a widowed father of 4 children, Craig, Cheryl, Leslee, & Kevin. Eleanor and Jim went on in adding to the family 2 children of their own, Kelly & Scott.
Eleanor served alongside her husband as co-owner and purveyor of Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City until retirement in 1990.
Eleanor was woven into the fabric of her community, with tireless commitment rooted not in obligation, but in a deep love for the people she served. She was a devoted parishioner of Saint Matthews Catholic Church in Boyne City serving in many capacities over the years. She was very active in Boyne City’s July 4th celebration and her passion eventually inspired her to run for City Commission. She was elected as a City Commissioner in 1993 and served until 2009, including serving as Mayor from 1999 to 2009. She is one of only two female Mayors in the City of Boyne City’s history. Hard work was the name of her game and also her expectation. She was lovingly, and possibly sometimes not soo lovingly known within the community as “Sarge”. Her devotion and commitment was steadfast and enduring, leaving a lasting and positive impact.
Eleanor is preceded in death by her husband Jim, sons Craig, Kevin, Scott, daughter Kelly, and grandson Garrett. She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Stackus and Leslee (Robert) Wiltjer along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to Grandvue MCF with the memo “Eleanor Stackus Memorial”. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate Grandvue staff for their dedicated care, kindness and support.
