Eloise Lucille Kalkofen, 82, of Indian River, passed away peacefully at her home April 21, 2021, surrounded by family. She was born Dec. 15, 1938 to Harold and Minnie Glover of Wolverine, and she grew up on the family farm. She attended Wolverine Community Schools and went back to graduate in 1956 after her oldest son Michael was born.
Eloise married James "Jim" Alba Bunker June 4, 1955. She tied Christmas wreathes for the Gearhart family before she and Jim started running Bunker Sawmill on Bunker Road in Indian River from 1967 until his death in June of 1981. The sawmill continued to run for six more years, until 1987, when the mill closed. She then went to work at the IGA grocery store in Indian River, then went to the Indian River Trading Post, where she worked until she retired.
She remarried, marrying her sweetheart from her teenage years, Karl Kenneth Kalkofen January 9, 2004.
Eloise enjoyed baking, cooking, canning, sewing, gardening and quilting, as well as spending time with her family and taking care of her pets. She also enjoyed taking walks, picking wild berries, playing cards and was always writing letters to her family and friends. She was also known as being strong, with a big heart, that would do anything for anyone. She would always put others before herself.
She is predeceased by her first husband, Jim Bunker, son Michael Bunker, daughter Jennifer Hahn, sister Dorothy Hitchings, and her parents, Harold and Minnie Glover.
Eloise is survived by her sons, Greg (Kathy) Bunker, Lenny (Lynn) Bunker, Karl Kalkofen, Keith Kalkofen and daughter Karol (Brent) Gschwend, sisters Yvonne (Roy) Vincent, Arbutus (Ben) Fogle, Linda (Mick) Bunker and brother Chud (Carol) Glover. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be hosted at the Burt Lake Christian Church on West M-68 on Saturday, April 24. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. and the funeral service will be at 2 p.m. A short reception will follow the service.
