Elwin "Al" Ellis passed away in his home in Topinabee, surrounded by his family, on December 31, 2021 at the age of 90. Al was born June 26, 1931 in Battle Creek to Harry and Helen Ellis. Indomitable in spirit, Al lived his life with passion and positivity until the end. He loved his family, his dogs, flying, sailing, hunting, exploring the north woods and a good Manhattan.
Upon graduation from Battle Creek Central High School, Al worked in the grocery and airplane industry before enjoying a long career in the natural gas industry rising from a service man to Director of Marketing until his retirement from the Battle Creek Gas Company. Upon retirement, he went on to earn his Realtor's license. Al had a lifelong love of aviation and could be found most days at the Indian River airport working on his 1946 Luscombe with his good friend, Andy Bowman, and many others who helped along the way.
Al is survived by his wife, Delores/Dee; sons Daniel Ellis of Brimley and Thomas (Joei/Joellen) Ellis of Clarklake; and daughters Julie (Matt) Hand of Grass Lake and Teresa (Douglas) Scott of Coldwater. He was blessed with numerous grandchildren including Corey, Chris, Caroline, Dylan, Alysen, Taylor, Samantha, John and Destini and five great grandchildren. Al also leaves behind his faithful canine companion, Ravin. We take solace in knowing that he is now surrounded by his parents, Harry and Helen, two brothers, Don and Ross, and great granddaughter, Willa Grace, who greeted him in Heaven.
The family wishes to thank many good neighbors and the community of Topinabee who made it possible for Al to remain in his home under the dutiful care of McLaren Hospice of Cheboygan for the past year. A memorial service will be held at the Cross in the Woods in the spring with hopes of clear skies and tailwinds.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial contribution to The Cross in the Woods or McLaren Hospice of Cheboygan.
The family is served by the Stone Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Indian River
