Frederick “Rick” Richard Hansen, 78, of Harbor Springs, Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home in Harbor Springs, Michigan surrounded by his loving family on January 14, 2022.
Son of Frederick and Yonne (Mathewson) Hansen, Rick was born February 21, 1943, in Big Rapids, Michigan. He attended grade school in Big Rapids and when his family moved to Detroit in 1951, he attended Saint Agatha Catholic High School in Redford, Michigan. He graduated from there in 1963 and went on to Lawrence Institute of Technology in Southfield, Michigan.
In 1965 Rick married Carol McCallum. They had two children, Wendy and Kirk, and lived in Redford Township, Highland, Michigan, and Farmington, Michigan respectively. In 1967 Rick left Lawrence Tech to accept the opportunity to become an apprentice electrician for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 58 in Detroit in 1967. He was awarded his journeyman’s card in 1972 and went on to earn his Master Electrician card. He worked as an electrician, mostly in the Detroit area, until 1987 when he earned his certification for estimating, and worked as an Estimator/Project Manager for several Electrical Companies in the Detroit area until his retirement in 2005. In 2011, when Carol retired they moved to their home Harbor Springs, Michigan.
Rick was an avid golfer, hunter and a passionate environmentalist. He enjoyed cooking, and especially baking bread which he loved to share with his friends and family. His real joy in life was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also loved being part of the Birchwood Farms Community where he volunteered and chaired on committees. He especially liked attending the social functions at Birchwood and had many friends. Rick was a kind, generous, quiet man. He was an example of dignity and courage in the face of his extended illness. He will be greatly missed.
Rick is survived by his loving wife Carol Hansen; his children Dr. Wendy (Robinson Walker) Hansen-Walker, and Kirk (Julie McAllister-Hansen) Hansen; his grandchildren: Dr. Margaret “Maggie” Rose Walker, David Robinson Walker, and Mathewson Frederick Walker; his nieces and nephews: Paul, Jon, and Laurie Franquist; and several cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Yonne Hansen; his sister Barbara Ann Franquist; his niece and nephew: Victoria and Donald Franquist; and his grandmother Charlotte Mathewson.
A memorial is planned for the family at Rick’s beloved hunt club, The Mosquito Ranch, in April or when weather and COVID permit. A gathering at Birchwood Farms Club House to celebrate Rick’s life is being planned for May.
