George R. Christensen, 85, of Cheboygan, passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at the American House in Petoskey.
A resident of Cheboygan for the past 14 years, moving from Fenton, George, also known as Jimmy Snowbank, was found abandoned as a two day old baby in a snowbank in Flint, and later adopted by Carl G. and Lela (Poole) Christensen. He was a graduate of Flint Central High School and then joined the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1952 – 1956 as an Airman 1st class. On October 29, 1955 in Spokane Washington, he married Betty Haeger, who preceded him in death in 2009. He was employed by General Motors in Flint for 33 years in the skilled trades, retiring in 1998. George enjoyed spending time at the Cheboygan Senior Center and area restaurants, talking with people, telling stories, sometimes with embellishment. He was a former member of the Fenton Eagles Club, and the Fenton VFW, where he also served on the honor guard, and the Luzerne American Legion, and is a current member of the Cheboygan Moose Lodge.
Surviving is his son, Bobbie (Andrea) Christensen of Cheboygan, two granddaughters, Andrea Beth (Sam) Watson of Perry, and Ashley (Ray) McGillis of St. Johns, and three great grandchildren, Lincoln Watson, and Aspen and Finley McGillis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, and a son, George Ezra Christensen in 1995.
Private family services have been held. Burial will take place at Oakhill Cemetery in Benton Township in the spring.
