Harold Joyce Obituary

Harold Ian Joyce, 61, of Charlton, Massachusetts has passed.

He leaves his father, Wm Kelly Joyce, Jr. of Conway, MI; siblings: Wm. Kelly Joyce, III (Diana), of West Barnstable, James Joyce (Jennifer O'Keeffe) of Lexington, Maartje Nolan  (Bryan) of Harbor Springs, MI, Cormac Joyce (Melissa) of Greenville, WI, Serena Joyce of South Portland, ME and Maria del Pilar McDermott (Marcel) of Appleton, WI; twelve nieces and nephews and many godchildren and their families. His mother, Virginia (Van Allan) Joyce and a nephew, Jonathan Joyce predeceased him.

Born in Amsterdam, Holland, Ian was raised speaking six languages. He was a graduate of Stonyhurst College, England; College of the Holy Cross; Harvard University; and Babson College. Ian served with honor and distinction in the United States Army.  He served as an Infantryman in the 10th Mountain Division before serving as a Chaplain Assistant in the Army Reserve. He achieved the following awards: RANGER tab, Expert Infantryman Badge, Basic Parachutist Badge, Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), the Army Achievement Medal (with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster), the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Operation Iraqi Freedom Campaign Medal (two bronze campaign stars). Major Joyce put his troops’ success, preparedness, and well-being above all else.

Ian's civilian career in banking involved Global Data Quality Project Management. He lived and worked in Latin America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East throughout his civilian and military careers.

Ian’s defining trait was helping others whenever and wherever needed. He engendered trust, respect and love in all who had the pleasure of calling him his friend. Beyond family and friends, he had a great love of animals, especially dogs, dancing, setting the world right for children, vintage Land Rovers and vintage BMW motorcycles.

A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, May 12th at 1:00pm at the Holy Childhood Catholic Church in Harbor Springs, where the family will begin receiving friends at 12:00pm (Noon).   A luncheon will follow.
