Harold Lee Koviak, 73, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 18, 2025. Harold was born in Cheboygan to dairy farmers Paul and Margaret (Connors) Koviak.
Harold was a loving- and much loved-father to his daughters, Jeni Koviak and Missy (Dave) Durston and a proud Papa to Greyson Durston, who brought him endless joy. He also leaves behind the girls’ mother Carol Koviak, along with her siblings Marilyn, Rosemary, and Chuck; and many dear friends and extended family members who enriched his life. He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Margaret (Connors) Koviak, and infant brother Paul Koviak Jr.
A graduate of Ferris State University and University of Wisconsin-Madison, he dedicated his career to banking and bookkeeping. He worked at several banks across the area. He retired from Boyne Highlands in 2019 after 31 years working in many departments; ticket sales, night auditor of bookkeeping, Bookkeeping and Office Manager, and Assistant Comptroller.
He was Burt Township Zoning Administrator then Trustee, before ending up serving as Burt Lake Supervisor for 23 years. At the time of his passing, he was serving as President of the Michigan Townships Association (MTA), where his leadership and warmth left a lasting impact.
In his younger years, Harold enjoyed coaching, refereeing and umpiring various school sports- always fair, always spirited. He refereed basketball for over 35 years. His proudest moment as an officiant was refereeing a State Finals Girls Basketball game in 2009 and umpiring a State Finals Girls Softball game in 2008. He also loved playing golf, especially when it meant good company and few laughs along the way. Though he would be the first to admit he wasn’t particularly handy, Harold had a knack for knowing “a guy” for every job – thanks to the deep friendships he cultivated over the years. Harold’s “Supervising” roles extended into all areas of his life.
Harold loved to spend time in his garden at the farm every summer and making trips to the casinos. He highly enjoyed his Vegas trips with lifetime college friend Bill Kinch. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed each hunting season with his longtime friend Tom Micham.
His heart belonged to Michigan State University, and he wore his green and white with pride, hardly ever missing a home Spartan football game (unless it was too cold or deer season).
Harold, also known as Papa, loved reading stories, playing board games and watching his grandson play at his sporting events. He absolutely loved being a grandpa.
Harold’s true gift was his love for people. His genuine care, social curiosity, and ability to connect with others-built bridges across the communities and generations. Whether sharing stories, offering support, or simply showing up, Harold made others feel seen and valued.
Visitation will be held at Nordman-Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan on Friday from 4-8pm with a private family burial.
Harold donated to many different organizations and cared deeply for his community, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity that is close to your heart in Harold’s memory.
