Harriet (Penny) Huber died peacefully in her home in Alanson, Michigan on March 26, 2026 having celebrated her 97th birthday earlier in the month.
Penny was born Harriet Alice Abbott in New York City on March 4, 1929. She was known during her lifetime as Penny, a nickname from early childhood. Her parents were John Maunder Kleeburg Abbott and Harriet (Scribner) Abbott.
Penny was pre-deceased by her husband Walter (Pat) Goss Huber who died in 2011. They enjoyed more than sixty years of happy marriage and raised two sons, Walter Goss Huber, Jr. (died 2011) and John Whitney Huber.
Pat and Penny purchased property in Alanson in early 1960’s on which they built a vacation cottage that the family enjoyed for many years. In 1995 Pat and Penny retired to Alanson, and became active in the local and county communities. Penny founded and edited The Alanson Village Chronicle, fulfilling a need she saw for reporting local news in Alanson. Penny joined the Board of Directors of The Friendship Centers of Emmet County, and served as the president of the Board when the new center in Petoskey was built on Anderson Road. She and Pat purchased and donated to the Friendship Centers a building in Brutus, known as The Huber Center, that serves the elderly communities from Alanson to Pellston. Penny and Pat were founding members of the Inland Water Route Historical Society, and contributed in many ways to the IWRHS museum on River Street in Alanson. They were steadfast supporters of The Little Traverse Conservancy and placed their land on the Crooked River into a conservation easement with the Conservancy.
Pat and Penny both enjoyed finishing their lives in northern Michigan with the many friends they made there.
A memorial service for Penny will be held at a future date.
