Harvey Rocheleau Obituary

Harvey Theodore Rocheleau, 94, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025 surrounded by the love of his family after experiencing complications related to a chronic Zenker’s diverticulum.

Born on a winter day in Holland, Michigan, Harvey spent his early childhood near the lakeshore while his father served as the Coast Guard lighthouse keeper. His parents, Henry and Ida Rocheleau, later moved the family to Cheboygan to be closer to relatives. Harvey graduated with pride as a member of the first class of Cheboygan Catholic High School.

From a young age, Harvey embraced hard work and adventure. He delivered milk for Inverness Dairy at age 12 and later worked as a pin boy at the Gold Front bowling alley before automatic pinsetters existed. After high school, he took a job painting railroad bridges, an opportunity that began a distinguished 43-year career with the Detroit & Mackinac Railroad. Harvey was promoted to train engineer in 1964, a role he cherished. Some of his happiest moments were sharing the magic of the rails with his children, delighting them with rides and stories from his life on the tracks.
Harvey’s life was defined by energy, discipline, and a lifelong love of athletics. An avid tennis player and ice skater, he competed in the Senior Olympics and collected numerous medals over the years, including first place in the snowshoeing race. He enjoyed coaching youth hockey for many years, cross-country skiing, and staying active in every season. Although 2023, at the age of 92, was the last year he logged biking and cross-country skiing miles, he totaled an extraordinary 1,241 miles, an achievement that reflected his determination and vitality.
He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was known for his good-natured humor, including his “Harvey Wallbanger” joke, which brought smiles to family and friends. In his later years, he continued to charm audiences with a one-of-a-kind ice-skating routine.

Harvey met Dolores Passeno through their involvement in the F.O.E., and they were married on May 27, 1995, at St. Mary’s Church in Cheboygan. Together they enjoyed a full and active life—spending time at the Eagles, cross-country skiing, playing tennis, ice skating, camping each year on South Manitou Island, and gardening at the family farm along the Cheboygan River.

Harvey shared meaningful moments with his children and is survived by: Gena (Boyd) Culver of Traverse City, Marie (Carlton) Holly of Indian River, Kurt Rocheleau of Warren, Char (David) Amalfitano of Traverse City, and Barbara Briggs of Milwaukee, WI; his brother, Ken Rocheleau of Charlevoix; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marion; his brothers, Fr. David Rocheleau and Melvin Rocheleau; his sister-in-law, Bernice Rocheleau; his sister-in-law, Ann Rocheleau; two grandsons, Phillip Grebe and John Culver; his nephew, Nicholas Rocheleau; and his beloved wife, Dolores Rocheleau, of nearly 30 years. A special thank you to all his home care aides the last few months especially Kailey Brooks, Jennifer Morse, Parker Bober, and Jan Smith.

Harvey lived a remarkable life. Like the engineer he was, he skillfully guided his train through life’s twists and turns, stopping along the way to share joy, pursue passions, and leave a lasting mark on every mile of the journey. His legacy will continue in the lives of all who loved him.
