Helen Marie Bur passed away peacefully at Medilodge of Cheboygan on November 11, 2021. Helen was born in Riggsville on December 28, 1939, to Leonard and Martha Bur. She spent her childhood on the family farm and attended The North School in Riggsville.
Helen worked at several different places over the years, including Royal Linen, Lamp Lighters, and at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. In her younger years, she competed in the Special Olympics and was awarded several medals for placing in her sport.
Helen enjoyed living a simple life. She had a great memory for birthdays and anniversaries, and always looked forward to spending time with her special great nephew and nieces, Richard Socolovitch, Amber Socolovitch, Emily (Socolovitch) Hart, and Amy (Socolovitch) Horstman.
Her hobbies involved watching the Tigers and Nascar, and doing word search puzzles, which she completed thousands of over her lifetime. She enjoyed collecting pictures of cats and kittens and drinking Pepsi.
Helen is survived by her sister Catherine (Bur) Socolovitch, her brother Richard (Felicia) Bur, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother Leonard and Martha Bur, brother John Bur, sister in-law Elizabeth Bur, and brother in-law Richard Socolovitch.
The family would like to thank the staff at Medilodge of Cheboygan for the wonderful care they provided to Helen over the last several years.
A funeral mass will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 17, with viewing and family greeting friends beginning one hour prior. A committal for Helen will take place at the Sacred Heart cemetery immediately following the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the local chapter of Special Olympics Michigan, Area 33, in memory of Helen. Donations can be sent to 2180 Quincy Road, Afton, Michigan 49705. Please make checks payable to Special Olympics Michigan, Area 33.
