Helen “Gramma” J. (Schmidt) Deming, 96, of Boyne City, Michigan, passed away on May 28, 2026, at The Brook of Boyne City.
Daughter of William and Pearl (Essex) Schmidt, Helen was born on September 13, 1929, in Hinsdale, Illinois. She grew up in Westmont, Illinois, and moved to Boyne City in 1951.
On September 10, 1955, she married Calvin C. Deming in at the Boyne City United Methodist Church. She met Cal on a blind date where Cal proceeded to propose to her that very night. They were married for 68 years and raised their family in Boyne City.
She started working for Western Electric & Medical Service in 1947 to 1951. Helen then worked at Top of Michigan Electric from 1951 to 1956. In 1968 she started working at Grandvue Medical Care Facility as a social worker until retiring in 1991. During retirement she volunteered at the Boyne City Elementary School helping the second grade for many years.
Helen enjoyed reading her kindle every day, journaling, and spending time with visitors. Her family always came first! She also enjoyed living at The Brook and being a social light. She was always involved with outings and in-house activities.
Adored by everyone, Helen was known as “Gramma” to children of all ages. She was always smiling and gave the best hugs.
Helen was a member of the Boyne City United Methodist church since the age of 18. She was very active in the church choir and several committees. She also volunteered at the Boyne City Public Schools, was on the Summertree Board of Directors for 32 years and in the Grandvue Auxiliary for 36 years.
Helen is survived by her children Kevin Deming, Craig (Darlene) Deming, Lynn (Mike) Shaw; sisters Carole Hughy and Peg Rodgers; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; special friend Trisha Ager; and many, many more.
She is preceded in death by her husband Calvin Deming; parents William and Pearl Schmidt; son Timothy Deming; and daughter-in-law Oreen Deming.
A funeral service officiated by Pastor Sarah Hescheles and Pastor Kathy Cadarette at the Compass Community Church (formerly Boyne City United Methodist Church) on June 2, 2026, at 1:00 PM. Visitation will begin at 11:30 AM and procession to the graveside service at Maple Lawn Cemetery will follow the funeral.
