Herbert Plaunt Obituary

Herbert Nelson Plaunt 90, of Mackinaw City, passed away peacefully (not due to CoVid) at his home on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, surrounded by his son, caretakers, and Pastor. Herbert was born in Mackinaw City on May 14, 1931. He was the son of Herbert and Julia (Anderson) Plaunt.

Herb grew up attending school in Mackinaw City before he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951, where he served in Guam and several other locations until he was honorably discharged in 1954. After returning he married the love of his life, Arlene Mae Lemorie and began raising a family.

Herb worked various jobs during his life from the auto industry for General Motors in Flint, to a maintenance man for Fort Michilimackinac, and even as a laborer on the Mighty Mackinac Bridge for American Bridge Corporation -the bridge division of United States Steel Corp. He then worked for Charmin which later became Proctor and Gamble, being a paper maker at the paper mill in Cheboygan, retiring 3 years before the plant closed. He closed out his working career working  as a maintenance man for Modez Enterprises doing hotel maintenance for several years until his final retirement. When Herb wasn’t traveling with his wife, he liked to be a homebody tending to his yard and gardens. For relaxation he would enjoy a good college or professional football game, a baseball game, or a NASCAR race. He was a member of the Church of the Straits in Mackinaw City.

Herbert is survived by his son, Steve Plaunt (Shannon Becker), a sister Loraine Bonter, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a sister-in-law Jeanette DeBord. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son-Herbert N Plaunt II, three siblings: Viola Weinberg, Markus Plaunt, and Marilyn Cole, and brothers-in-law Ed DeBord.

A memorial service will take place at the Church of the Straits in Mackinaw City on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at 1:00 pm; with family greeting friends one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cheboygan County Humane Society.
