Hugh William Smith

Hugh William Smith, 78, of Royal Oak and formerly of Petoskey, passed away after a long illness at his home surrounded by his family on June 4, 2021.

Hugh was born on March 25th, 1943 to Max and Ione Smith in Charlevoix, Michigan. Raised in Petoskey, Hugh graduated from Petoskey High School in 1962. Hugh went on to graduate from Central Michigan University with a bachelors degree in biology.

Hugh owned and operated Petoskey Linen Service for the next twenty years before becoming the service manager at Bob Mathers Ford in Boyne City. Hugh was fortunate to have been given the opportunity to serve on Petoskey’s City Council for the better part of the 1980s.

Hugh is survived by his wife of fifty four years Susie, his children Todd, Laurie and Scott as well as his son-in-law Brian Gietzen and grandchildren Jack, Abigail, Benjamin and Alexander. Hugh is also survived by his twin sister Meryl Schave and brothers Brook and Clark.

A visitation is planned for Wednesday, June 9th from 6 to 8 pm at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey. Services celebrating Hugh’s life will be held Thursday, June 10th at 10 am at Stone Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
