James Weiss Obituary

James “Jim” Weiss aged 93 of Cheboygan died peacefully in the early morning hours on May 2, 2025. Jim was born to Albert and Genevieve (Bur) Weiss on January 29, 1932 in Cheboygan where he grew up on the family farm in Monroe Township.  He was a lifelong resident of Cheboygan.

Jim was the third in a family of twelve children.  He was known to be a hard worker his entire life and helped his father raise his younger siblings on the farm following the death of his mother at a young age.

In 1956, Jim married Florence Lind in Mackinaw City.  They soon settled on a farm in Monroe Township near where he was raised.  Their marriage continued for 52 years and they were blessed with 4 children.  Tragically in January 1970 their young son was killed when hit by a car.  Throughout his life, Jim instilled a sense of the importance of history and family in all his children.

Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was honorably discharged after his four year hitch. He had a long and successful career in the electrical field with five years at Hall Electric of Muskegon and five years with Clement Electric building power distribution stations in Southwest Michigan.  He eventually found his way back home to Cheboygan where he landed a job with Charmin Paper Products, later known as Proctor and Gamble, where he worked for twenty-two years.  After retirement Jim worked at Boyne Highlands working on the golf course filling divots left by golfers.

Jim enjoyed all things rusty and/or greasy and travelled all around the midwest to attend auction sales, flea markets and engine shows.  He especially enjoyed attending the shows in Walloon Lake, Buckley and Escanaba.  He equally enjoyed the roles of host, vendor and customer.  His ventures lead to the multitude of stories that he was always willing to share with family and friends. Jim had a great love for God and family and would frequently enlighten those around him with his great sense of humor.

JIm was preceded in death by his wife, Florence, his son, James “Jay-Jay” Weiss, Jr., parents, Albert and Genevieve, brothers, Raymond and Ronald and sisters, Theresa Pratt and Agnes Blaskowski.  Jim is survived by his children, Jeanne (Randy) Enos, Kevin (Laurie) Weiss and Lisa Weiss; his grandchildren, Dean Enos, Duane (Lisa) Enos, Crystal Enos, Kathryn “Katie” Weiss, James “Jay” Weiss III, Jacob Weiss, Kayla (Jorrie) Weiss and Kristina (Mike) Schoenith; 8 great-grandchildren; siblings, Margeret Beethem, Anna “Ann” Weiss, Charles (Carol) Weiss, Cecilia “Cele” Makowski, Fred (Evelyn) Weiss, Rita (Bill) Bur and Edward (Laura) Weiss; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

A Catholic Funeral Mass will take place Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at St. Mary’s/St. Charles Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with family accepting visitors for one hour prior to the services.  Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery immediately following the funeral. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation be made on Jim’s behalf to Bishop Baraga Catholic School or Hospice.
