JoAnn Marie Gibes

JoAnn Gibes was born on November 11, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan. She was the daughter of Walter and Stella Gibes.

The family moved to Boyne Falls, Michigan in 1946.

JoAnn attended Boyne Falls School from kindergarten through 8th grade. She graduated from St. Francis High School in Petoskey, Michigan in 1962. She then attended Noth Central Michigan College in Petoskey. After that she went to Northern Michigan University where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. JoAnn also earned her Master’s Degree from Central Michigan University.

She began her teaching career in Iron Mountain, Michigan. JoAnn then taught in Lansing, Michigan and completed her career in Boyne Falls.

She was very active in her Catholic faith. She was on many commissions for the Diocese of Gaylord and Boyne Valley Catholic Community. She was also involved in book club, Bible study, prayer group, setting up for Mass, washing altar linens, the altar guild, and the choir.

JoAnn was also involved in her community. She was a long-time member of the Boyne Falls Polish Festival Committee. She was the Honored Citizen of the 2010 Polish Festival.

She loved to bake. At Christmas, she would bake hundreds of cookies. She would give approximately 20 plates of cookies to friends.

She died April 24, 2024.

She is preceded in death by her parents Walter and Stella Gibes.

JoAnn is survived by her sister Joyce and nephew Corbin (Cheri) and Justin (Makenzy) and Anna.

She was a loving person and will be greatly missed.

A visitation at the St. Augustine Catholic Church will be on April 29, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and rosary will begin at 7:00 PM. The funeral Mass will be officiated by Father Dennis Stilwell on April 30, 2024, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM and burial will be at St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery following Mass.
