John F. Scott, 82, of Petoskey passed to his Heavenly Home on June 23, 2019 at Pineview Cottage in Harbor Springs.
John Frederick was born May 8, 1937 in Detroit, the first son of Roy and Charlotte Scott. He attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Denby High School in 1955. On June 20, 1959 he married his high school sweetheart, Kaye Solger, who he first met in the seventh grade. Together they raised three children, Jill, John, and Kyle. They lived in Troy, Michigan before moving to Petoskey in 1975.
He attended the Walsh Institute of Accountancy in the Detroit area, and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1971. John was a member of the American Institute of CPAs, and the Michigan Association of CPAs. John was employed by the Petoskey CPA firm, Hill, Woodcock & Schroderus, before becoming a self employed CPA.
His leadership qualities and administrative skills were apparent throughout his life. He served on various Boards, including his college fraternity, Troy Jaycees, Kiwanis, Emmet County Fair Board, and was the Petoskey Nehemiah Treasurer for many years. John’s love of animals led him to become a Market Livestock 4H leader for numerous years. He also was greatly involved in church leadership.
John had a big heart, an engaging sense of humor, loved people, and was benevolent and generous with his time and talents. John’s distinctive chuckle will never be forgotten. Most importantly, his family and his Lord Jesus Christ were at the very center of his life.
John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kaye; his children, Jill Walker of Traverse City, John Scott of Royal Oak, and Kyle (Michael) Hempstead of Petoskey. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Jacob Walker, Troy (Astra) Walker, Kate Scott, Mitchell Scott, Katelyn (Nick) Breed, Taylor Hempstead, and David Hempstead; three great grandchildren, Henrik Walker, Liam, and Claire Breed. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James, son-in-law Dean Walker, Karl Thomsen, and great grandson Edgar Walker.
There will be a celebration of John’s life at Walloon Lake Community Church, officiated by Pastor Jeff Ellis, on July 15 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m.
