On April 12, 1957, he married Ruth Ramage in Boyne Falls, Michigan. In 1963, the couple moved to Grand Rapids, where Joseph worked for Hekman Furniture for 37 years. He retired in 2000 and returned to Boyne Falls, where he spent his later years reconnecting with friends old and new. During his retirement, he worked at the Boyne Valley Transfer Station.
Joseph was well known for his love of gardening and was affectionately called “Zucchini Joe” by many for the abundance of vegetables he grew both at his home and at the “back forty.” He also enjoyed spending time relaxing on his deck, especially on warm, sunny days.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary K. Matelski; grandchildren, Tiffany (Josh) and Ryan; sisters, Sally (Virgil) Harris and MaryJane (Larry) Blaine; sister-in-law, Bobbie Marchinkewicz; special Grand Rapids “backyard nephews” and “back forty nephews”; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Andy Matelski.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Maggie; his beloved wife, Ruth, who passed away on September 15, 1995; his son-in-law, George T. Matelski; sisters, Cecilia Plotzke, Theresa Kulka, and Eleanor Skierski; and brothers, John Jaglowski, Adam “Sam” Marchinkewicz, Richard “Duke” Marchinkewicz, and David “Rawhide” Morris.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private burial will take place at a later date when the weather permits.
Joseph will be remembered for his warm spirit, strong work ethic, and the joy he found in simple pleasures and lifelong friendships.
