Joseph Schwartzfisher Obituary

It is with profound love and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph Andrew Schwartzfisher, who departed this life peacefully on November 15, 2025, at the age of 96. He was surrounded by his devoted and loving family in his final moments.

Born on June 30, 1929, in Petoskey, Michigan, Joe was the son of the late John and Anna Schwartzfisher. He was a member of a large and vibrant family, one of fifteen children, and he carried the bonds of that expansive siblinghood throughout his life. He is survived by his siblings Edith Kruskie and Leo Schwartzfisher.

Joe dedicated his life to his family, his faith, and his community. His enduring love story began when he married the former Lucile Louise Kolinski on December 1, 1956, a beautiful union that spanned nearly seven decades and was built on mutual respect, unwavering commitment, and shared joy.

A proud patriot, Joe served his country honorably in the United States Army, a period of his life that instilled in him a deep sense of duty and discipline. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career with the United States Postal Service. Starting as a dedicated Carrier, he worked hard and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the Postmaster of Charlevoix, where he served the community with integrity and a friendly smile until his well-deserved retirement.

Joe's faith was a cornerstone of his existence. He was a dedicated and active member of St. Francis Catholic Church. His commitment to his parish was evident through his long service as an usher, greeting fellow parishioners with warmth every Sunday. He was also instrumental in the financial life of the community, serving on the board of the St. Francis Credit Union for many years. His commitment to service extended to the Knights of Columbus, where he was a dedicated member and had the distinguished honor of serving a portion as the Grand Knight, promoting charitable works and fellowship within the order.

Beyond his professional and community service, Joe found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. He relished his time working on his farm, a peaceful retreat that allowed him to connect with the land and his family. Above all, his greatest happiness came from spending time with his beloved children, cherished grandchildren, and adored great-grandchildren, creating countless memories that his family will treasure forever.

Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Louise; his devoted daughter, Linda (Dave) Zulski; and his three loving sons, Bill (Cindy) Schwartzfisher, Andy (Stephanie) Schwartzfisher, and Jim (Ellen) Schwartzfisher. His legacy continues through his six beloved grandchildren, Andrea (Matt), Jason, Dana (Corey), Wyatt, Kate, Anna, and great grandchildren (Lilly, Alex, Max, Leila, and Zyan) who brought immense light into his later years.

A visitation will be held at St. Francis Catholic Church in Petoskey on Friday, November 21st, at 11:00 a.m., immediately followed by a Funeral Mass at 12:00 p.m. Joe’s life of faith, service, and devotion will be celebrated by all who knew and loved him.
