Joyce E. (Oliver) Sly

Joyce Elaine Sly, 87, of Petoskey, died July 13, 2021 at Villa at the Bay.

Joyce was born on August 25, 1933, in Gaylord, the daughter of Henry and Ina (Turner) Oliver. She attended school in Detroit and graduated in 1951.

On January 13, 1951, she married Marvin Sly in Detroit. Together they had four children.

Joyce started her own business “Lakeview Nursery and Greenhouse” in Petoskey in 1981. She was extremely well liked by her clients and ran a successful business until her retirement in 2002.

She loved to quilt, study family genealogy, and visit any casino she passed along her journeys. She was an avid traveler and saw many places including England, Scotland, Hawaii, and Niagara Falls to name a few. She was always very independent and adventurous.

Joyce is survived by her daughters, Jackie Beesley of Green Castle, IN., Barbara (Steve) Weesner of Walloon Lake, MI., and Margie (David) Hicks of Poland, IN.; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren; and by her sisters, Mary Rich of Gaylord, MI. and Jean Figg of Petoskey, MI.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; son, Robert “Bob” Sly; and brothers, Clark, Dale, William and Robert Oliver.

There will be a graveside service at Fairview Cemetery in Gaylord on Monday, July 19, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. David Behling will officiate.
