Judith "Judy" Anne Borowicz, of Cheboygan, MI passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, August 1, 2025. Born on April 9, 1945, the daughter of William Jewell Sr. and Myrtle Peterson, she grew up on Duncan Bay surrounded by a large musical family. Judy, affectionately nicknamed “Julia” by Barry Brooks, (brother to sister-in-law Bonnie Brooks Jewell who loved Judy like another mom), devoted her life to being a wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend to many. After graduating from Cheboygan High School in 1963, Judy worked at Plymouth Industries for 2 years.
On September 18, 1965, Judy joined another large family when she married Edmund “Ed” Borowicz at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Riggsville, MI. Judy was known for her infectious smile. She was a story collector and a storyteller. Judy loved keeping up on the details of her extended family and was grateful for stories of her dozens of nieces and nephews. She was a natural caregiver, providing in-home health care for Marvin Stokes, Catherine and Bernice Malavey, her father-in-law Louis, and countless family members throughout the years. She spent 7 years working for The Salvation Army and 3 at the Sand Road Community Center managing the commodities program for those in need throughout Cheboygan County.
Judy continued her giving-back ways and worked at the Lockland Thrift Store after following Ed with the Proctor & Gamble transfer. She loved the eight active years she and Ed spent living in Cincinnati, OH before they retired back up north. Some of her best Ohio days were spent watching the Cincinnati Reds with her neighbor Clara Bushelman, and some of her best Michigan days were at Jewell and Borowicz family reunions. Through the years Judy enjoyed crafting, crocheting, reading, visiting casinos with family and friends, and later spending time at the family cottage on Clear Lake in Dowling, MI.
Judy is survived by Edmund and their four children: Louis Borowicz of Cheboygan, MI; Jeffery (Lisa) Borowicz of South Lyon, MI; Linda Borowicz of Cincinnati, OH; and Jodi (Shauna Swantek) Borowicz of Dowling, MI. She is also survived by her beloved grandson Nicholas Borowicz of Grand Rapids, MI and honorary granddaughter Samantha Miller of Cheboygan, MI.
Judy is also remembered fondly by her surviving siblings: George (Bonnie, deceased) Jewell, Shirley (Edward) Reimann, Lorraine (Darwin, deceased) Finkbeiner, Linda (Phil, deceased) Lavender, Bonnie (Raymond, deceased) Simpson, and Nancy (Keith, deceased) Yeager, as well as three brother-in-laws: Joseph (Arlee) Borowicz, Sylvester (Elaine, deceased) Borowicz, and David (Lorraine) Borowicz.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Jacob Crowe-Borowicz, sisters Beverly (Richard) Richardson and Carol (Michael, deceased) King, and five brother-in-laws: Benedict (Dorothy, deceased) Borowicz, Paul (Lorena deceased) Borowicz, Thomas (Joyce) Borowicz, Steven (Joyce) Borowicz, and Leo (Joanne, Virginia, Joyce).
The family will celebrate Judy’s life on Thursday, August 7 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A short visitation will begin at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m. Burial will follow immediately at the church cemetery. Family and friends are invited to honor her memory and share stories at a luncheon at the Eagles beginning at 12:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the family who will support a Cheboygan area initiative in her memory.
