Karen Louise Hughes

Karen L. Hughes, 69, of Ortonville, Michigan, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2025, in Burton, Michigan, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by love, with her devoted husband Dennis and beloved daughter Katie at her side.

Born on February 7, 1956, Karen grew up in Royal Oak, Michigan, and later made her home in Ortonville. She cherished her summers in Indian River, where she enjoyed the peace of nature and the thrill of fishing—often reeling in the biggest catch, which she fondly called her "Muscle Fish."

Karen was a vibrant and adventurous soul. In her early years, she traveled the world alongside her husband, creating memories that would last a lifetime before settling down to raise their daughter. She was a gifted scuba diver, a passionate Detroit Lions fan, and an extraordinary cook whose meals brought joy and comfort to family and friends.

Her creativity shone through in every aspect of her life, especially in the stunning costumes she lovingly crafted for her daughter’s plays and musicals. Above all, Karen was a deeply devoted wife and mother, who poured her heart into her family and made every day brighter with her presence.

Karen is survived by her loving husband Dennis and cherished daughter Katie; her niece Lisa Norton and Lisa’s sons, Turner and Ivan; nephew Craig Norton; brother George Bastuba and  his wife Nori, and their daughter Naomi; brother Tom, his wife Lynn, and their son Kevin and his husband Doug; brother-in-law Tim; sister-in-law Debbie and her husband Mike; nephew Brian and his sons Miles and Deagan; nephew Craig, his wife Kara, and their children Morgan and Brandon; and stepmother-in-law Liz; and several cousins and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Wilma and George; her sister Kathy and brother-in-law Dewey; her father-in-law Robert; mother-in-law Barbara; and brother-in-law Robert.

Karen's warmth, humor, strength, and unwavering love will be missed by all who had the privilege to know her.

A Funeral Service will be held at Cross in the woods on Monday, May 5th, 2025, 12:00P.M. (Noon), With burial to follow at Koehler Cemetery. There will be a lunchen at the Cross in the Woods Visitor center after the burial.
