Larry Shubel Obituary

Laurence “Larry” F. Shubel, 83, of Petoskey, died May 4, 2021 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital.

Larry was born on July 25, 1937, in Caro, Michigan, the son of Gilbert and Ethel (Foster) Shubel. He spent much of his early life in Port Austin and attended college at Central Michigan University and the University of Michigan. Larry worked as a captain on fish research boat the Channel and that is where he met the love of his life, Sherrie Elliott. They met in 1978 while Sherrie was aboard a research boat, she was a student studying aquatic biology, and Larry was the Captain. They became close friends and on December 21, 1996, they became husband and wife.

Their adventures continued as they made their home in Northern Michigan. Larry said it never mattered where they were going as long as he had Sherrie by his side. In 1996, he retired and started taking life a little slower. He found joy in simple things like sitting on the deck and taking in all the quiet serenity of homelife. He was a talented woodworker and made furniture and Bible holders for his friends and family. He was a devoted Christian man and read his Bible daily. He was a member of the Walloon Lake Community Church and would often say “Amazing Grace from God” when he was acknowledging all the special moments and wonderful gifts he had been given throughout his life.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Sherrie Elliott of Petoskey; his sister, Linda Shubel of St. Clair Shores; brother-in-law, Dr. David (Andrea) Elliott of Iowa; sister-in-law, Dianne (Bob) Aycoth of Delaware; sister-in-law, Debbie (Forest) Nicholas of Tennessee; nieces and nephews, Eric, Becky (Josh), Sara, Erica, Aaron, Andrew, Ryan, Nathaniel and Naomi; great-nephew, Wyatt; his dog, Kes; and many close friends and extended family, including but not limited to Mason Godzik, Scott Murray and Katelyn Godzik, Jason Smith, the “Rich Boys” Greg, Danny and Patrick, Dan and Lisa, Jack and Linda, Sherrie’s God-daughters, Katie and Amanda, Nikki girl, Ashley, Zack; his Crystal Lake family and his Church family.

Sherrie would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Bay Area Pet Resort for taking such great care of Larry’s precious dog, Kes, during all of his recent medical emergencies and hospital stays.

Larry’s family also wants to mention how grateful they are to his devoted caregivers, Lisa Murray, Lee Cloyd, Bea Antaya, Sandra Hendricks and Roger Reynolds.

There will be a funeral at Walloon Lake Community Church on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior. Pastors Jeff Ellis and Chad Overbeek will officiate. There will be an option to live stream the service for those who cannot attend in person.
