LaVonna Giles Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of LaVonna Jean Giles, age 90, announces that she passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on March 26, 2024. LaVonna was born on February 12th, 1934, to Leo & Bertha Russell in Clare, Michingan. LaVonna’s family moved to Petoskey in 1952 and made it their home. LaVonna graduated from Petoskey High School in 1952. After graduation she moved to Indiana taking a job with a phone company before moving back to the Petoskey area where she met and married the Love of her life William (Bill) Giles on May 1st, 1954. Together they made Petoskey their home and raised their four children: Colleen (Rolly) Grubaugh of Petoskey, MI; Mark (Debra) Giles of Grand Rapids, MI; John Giles of Petoskey, MI; and Phillip (Lori) Giles of Saline, MI. LaVonna had a highly successful career working for the Michigan Secretary of State until her retirement. During her years of raising her family she attended many sporting events cheering on all the kids in all the different sports they played. When not attending games LaVonna could be found at the bowling alley enjoying league night with the ladies. When not bowling LaVonna was a vital part of the “Women’s Auxlliary” for the Petoskey Order of Eagles. On some evenings you could find her down at the Eagles Club #2462 visiting with members while sipping on her favorite cocktail with her best friend Fran Lentz. LaVonna was a devoted grandmother to nine grandchildren. She truly enjoyed being with all the grandkids, especially for their birthdays and holidays. LaVonna will truly be missed by her family and friends along with many members of the community.

LaVonna is survived by her children Colleen (Rolly) Grubaugh of Petoskey, MI; Mark (Debra) Giles of Grand Rapids, MI; John Giles of Petoskey, MI; and Phillip (Lori) Giles of Saline, MI; grandchildren Matthew, Trevor & Kaitlyn Grubaugh, Ashley Giles, Mallory (Brandon) Maxbauer, Caesy Giles, Alisa Giles, & Delaney Giles; six great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

We will be celebrating by the spreading of her ashes on Saturday May 11th at 11:00 AM at Greenwood Cemetery in the garden. A small luncheon will follow at the Petoskey Eagles Club at 12:30 PM.
