With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Lee Henry Hanson, who left this world on August 17, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on November 22, 1934, in Wausau, Wisconsin and growing up in the small town of Wittenberg, Wisconsin, Lee lived a life rich in love, laughter, and dedication.
Lee was the beloved son of Henry and Myrtle Hanson, who preceded him in death. He cherished the memories of his childhood and carried the lessons learned from his parents throughout his life. He was also preceded in death by his in-laws Mervil and Minnie Kaufman, Merle Kaufman, and Philip Hellestad.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra Hanson, with whom he shared 65 years of beautiful marriage that were filled with joy and companionship. Together, they raised a loving family that includes their beloved children: Bonnie (David) Orr, Lori (Walt) Hungerbuhler, Karen (Trent) Burrus, and Tami (Paul) McNitt. Lee took immense pride in being a father and later a grandfather, and he was blessed with 10 grandchildren Kara (JonMark), Tyler, Adam, Anna, Curt (Brittany), Alicia (David), Briana (Nick), Jared (Ally), Caleb (Steph), Derek and 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy and comfort. He was their biggest fan in all of their endeavors.
Lee and Sandy's life together was a testament to faith, love, and commitment. Though it was common for Lee to tell everyone in the room that he loved them, it was his warm, welcoming, and genuine nature that made each visit with him feel like coming home. There was always a sense of belonging in his presence, making everyone feel seen, appreciated, and cared for, as if they were family, whether they were long-time friends or newly acquainted. Lee’s love was unconditional and effortless. He loved deeply and openly, and in return, he was loved with the same sincerity.
Lee is affectionately remembered by his sister, Janet Hellestad, and in-laws Jack Kaufman, Sue (Brian) Gilbertson, and Dawn Wolff who shared a special bond with him throughout the years. Despite the distance and obstacles that separated them in recent years, they maintained their relationship through phone calls that never failed to leave Lee with a big smile and a warmed heart.
His extended family, friends, and coworkers will forever hold onto the memories of his laughter and sharp wit, characteristics that defined Lee and brought joy to all those who knew him.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor's degree in Biology, Lee honorably served in the United States Army. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to the Hammond Bay Biological Station, where he passionately worked to reduce the invasive lamprey eels from the Great Lakes, and where his publications brought awards acknowledging his talents as a researcher and writer. Even after retirement, Lee continued his vital work through research, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the environment.
Lee was an active member of the community, attending St. Thomas Lutheran Church, where he formed lasting friendships and contributed to the fellowship of his church family. He took great pleasure in spending time outdoors, enjoying hunting and fishing with loved ones, and creating cherished memories in nature.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Cheboygan, MI, on August 29, with a visitation at 10 AM, service at 11:00 AM, and a luncheon after the service.
