Loretta Viola Kowalski, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend went to be with her Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, on July 31, 2025, at her home in Harbor Springs at the age of 88.
Born on May 23, 1937, in Barton City, Michigan, Loretta was the daughter of a large Irish farming family with seven siblings known as the McGregors where she learned the values of hard work, faith, and generosity.
Loretta began her career as an executive secretary, spent a few years as a real estate agent, where she found joy helping others find their perfect place to call home, and pursued nursing courses to help care for those around her. In 1992, she partnered with her daughter, Diane, to open Antiques Art & Collectibles, where she ministered with kindness and shared her appreciation for beautiful treasures. Her greatest accomplishment was being a caring homemaker devoted to her family.
In 1956, Loretta married Richard “Dick” Kowalski, her beloved husband of 65 years, who preceded her in death in 2022. Together, they raised their family where she became known as a fantastic baker and cook, delighting family and friends with her homemade pies and heartwarming meals. Her kitchen was the heart of her home, filled with laughter, stories, and the sweet aroma of freshly baked treats.
As a Christian, Loretta was known for her generosity where she supported charities and individuals. She made known how God provided through kind people in a time of need. Throughout her life, she continued to build a life rooted in faith and love.
She is survived by her six loving children, Katherine (Thom) Schacher, Peggy (Todd) Turbin, Diane (Larry) Smith, Barbara (James) Ingraham Jr., Richard (Deirdre) Kowalski, and Robert (Maureen) Kowalski; 13 cherished grandchildren; and 11 adored great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to North Star Hospice. The visitation (10-11:00 a.m.), Mass (11:00 a.m.), and luncheon is on Friday, August 8, 2025, at Holy Childhood of Jesus Catholic Church in Harbor Springs.
May her gentle soul rest in peace in the presence of her Lord and Savior.
