Marcia Sydow Obituary

Marcia Ann Sydow, 85, of Brutus, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on July 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on January 26, 1940, in Dayton, Ohio, to Paul and Anna (Szegi) Reinhardt, Marcia moved with her family to Douglas Lake, Michigan in 1943—Her parents were among the pioneering families who helped develop the Reinhardt Shores area, where they opened a marina that became a beloved community hub. Growing up on the lake was an adventure—Marcia learned countless life skills there, from boating to fishing to helping with the family business. Those formative years gave her a strong work ethic, a deep love for the outdoors, and lifelong memories of freedom and discovery along the shoreline. Douglas Lake always remained a place that would forever remain close to her heart.

Marcia was a proud graduate of Pellston High School, Class of 1958, and married the love of her life, Carl “Smiley” Sydow, in 1959. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and adventure.

Marcia began her career at State Bank and Trust while still in high school, starting as a bookkeeper. With dedication and a keen mind for business, she rose through the ranks, ultimately retiring in 1994 as Vice President of Branch Administration for Old Kent Bank’s Northwest Region—overseeing branches in Walloon, Petoskey, Harbor Springs, and Alanson. Her leadership and warmth left a lasting impact on her colleagues and community.

A lifelong member of Zion Christian Fellowship Church in Brutus, Marcia lived her faith through kindness, service, and deep devotion to her family. She had a passion for flower gardening, rock picking—especially Lake Superior agates—and traveling the country with Smiley and dear friends, exploring places like Alaska, Texas, and Florida. But more than anything, her heart belonged to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Though she and Smiley were avid travelers, their adventures often ended early when homesick grandchildren called; Marcia never hesitated to return home when her family needed her.

Marcia rarely missed a sporting event, often traveling across the state to cheer from the sidelines. At home, she was the heart of the family – welcoming great-grandkids with open arms, sweet treats, and gentle hugs. Her grandchildren always knew ‘Grams’ would say yes.  She lovingly taught her granddaughters to cook and bake, passing down treasured Hungarian family recipes—along with her patient spirit and warm heart.

Marcia’s home was a place of gathering, where Sunday dinners and holiday feasts brought everyone together. Feeding her family was one of her greatest joys, and no one ever left the table hungry – or without a container of leftovers in hand. It wasn’t just the food, but the love behind it, and the company she cherished.

Marcia is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Carl Sydow; her son Jeffrey (Diane) Sydow; her daughter-in-law Rhonda Getz; her grandchildren Ashley (Paul) Kuzee, Abby (Douglas) Blaskowski, Anna-Rae Sydow, Olivia (Martin) Minehan, Carl (Daniella) Sydow, and Jacob Sydow; and her great-grandchildren Maxton, Liam, and Finley Blaskowski; Dominic and Dutton Minehan; and Frankie Kuzee. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Elsie Sydow, as well as many nieces and nephews with whom she shared a deep and loving bond throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Anna Reinhardt, her in-laws Carl and Frieda (Wurst) Sydow, her brother Paul “Tiny” and his wife Marilee, her beloved son Randell “Randy” Sydow, and eight brothers and sisters-in-laws from the Sydow Family.

Marcia leaves behind a legacy of grace, strength, and unwavering love. Her gentle presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 am on Monday, July 14, 2025 at Zion Christian Fellowship Church in Brutus, MI, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to McLaren Home Health - Hospice.
