Marian Reed

Marian L. Reed (Hiar), 93, of Levering, Michigan, died peacefully at her home on June 7, 2021.

Marian was born September 15, 1927, on the Hiar farm on Luesing Road near Levering, and was the daughter of George and Katherine Hiar. She grew up with her brothers George and Paul, attended school in Levering, and graduated from Pellston High School in 1945.

On November 18, 1945, she married Robert G. Reed at the Methodist Church in Levering. During the late 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s, she worked as a homemaker with her husband on the Reed Family farm, where together they raised their sons Douglas and John. After her sons went to college in the mid-1960s, Marian worked as a waitress at Cunningham’s Restaurant in Mackinaw City. In 1979, she and Robert moved to Washington State, and lived there until 1986, when Robert retired. They then returned to Levering, and later built a new home on Reed Road. Marian enjoyed summers in Northern Michigan and winters in Dade City, Florida.

Marian loved to play golf and did so into her late 80s. She liked to play cards…especially cribbage and euchre…play bingo, read, and watch Westerns on TV.  She also enjoyed tending her flowers and other plants around the house.

Marian is survived by her two sons, Douglas Reed, D.M.A., of New York City, and John Reed, M.D., of Baltimore; her grandson Eric Reed and wife Sarah of New York City; her two great-grandsons, Oliver and Elliot Reed of New York City; and many nephews and nieces. Marian was preceded in death by her husband Robert Reed (1995), her father George Hiar, Sr. (1962), her mother Katherine (Wagner) Hiar (1996), her brother George Hiar, Jr. (2013), and her brother Paul Hiar (2014).

Pastor: Michelle Merchant will officiate at a graveside service at the Carp Lake Township Cemetery on Monday, June 14, 2021, at 10 am. A memorial celebration will be held at a future date to be announced.
