Marilyn (O’Shaughnessy) Pater, 87, of Petoskey, died late Monday, March 9, 2020.
Marilyn was born in Bay City, Michigan on August 15, 1932 to Edwin and Maryon (Sampson) O’Shaughnessy. She grew up in Mt. Pleasant and Lansing. After graduating from J.W. Saxton high school and Michigan State College, she accepted an English teaching position at Petoskey High School in 1954. In 1957, she married Edward Pater in Petoskey. They moved to Lansing in 1959 and resided there for 11 years. In 1970, they returned to Petoskey with their 4 children where Marilyn taught at PHS until 1993. Upon retiring, she and Ed traveled extensively in the United States and the British Isles. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ed and her brother, Thomas O’Shaughnessy of Versailles, Kentucky. Surviving are her 4 children and their spouses, Laura (Michael) Strobel of Petoskey, Daniel (Dawn) Pater of Traverse City, Elizabeth (Patrick) Robbins of Petoskey and Matthew (Karrie) Pater of Harbor Springs; 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; brother in law, John Pater of Petoskey; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will be holding a memorial service which will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Little Traverse Bay Humane Society or Hospice of Michigan.
