Marilyn Seldon graduated to Heaven on August 5, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength, creativity, and unwavering love for her family and friends.
Marilyn was the daughter of Elva Johnson Seldon and William “Red” Seldon. She was born on June 18, 1941 in Petoskey, Michigan. She was married to Micheal Mattox for 42 years. She was the mother of Gary Scherphorn and Tami Walker (Tom), and a proud grandmother to Keaton Walker Compton (Caleb) and TJ Walker. She loved her siblings, Patricia Shuttleworth, Bill Seldon (Donna), and Mary Melke (Tim); as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, first husband Gene Scherphorn, brother Bill, sister Pat, nephew Robert Seldon, nephew Johnny Allen, and Niece-in-law, Angie Seldon
At 18, she moved from Petoskey to Grand Rapids to begin a new chapter of life—a city that would shape much of her story. Her entrepreneurial journey began with a bold decision: to tear down a barn by herself. That moment became a turning point—proof to Marilyn that she could do anything she set her mind to. She went on to build a successful rental property business, transforming aging homes into stylish, welcoming spaces. Her eye for design and love for beauty made her an exceptional interior decorator.
After over 20 years in rental properties, Marilyn and her husband launched his new invention, The Heavyrope. It was a weighted jump rope that many (including well-known, professional athletes) used to train. As the President of the worldwide company, she ran all business aspects.
Marilyn Seldon was a woman of many talents and boundless hospitality. One of her greatest joys was hosting unforgettable gatherings—whether at Heavyrope’s World Headquarters in Grand Rapids or at her beloved Ten Gables “Cottage” in Petoskey—where you could always count on live music, delicious food, and heartfelt singing. She brought in talented musicians, curated delightful menus, and encouraged everyone to sing. Marilyn, herself, was a gifted jazz soloist who performed under the name Mercedes, Her voice carried a richness that remained vibrant even in her final years. Her daughter’s favorite song that Marilyn sang was “Summertime.”
Later in life, after returning to Petoskey, Marilyn picked up writing. She wrote historical fiction stories and non-fiction. She found special meaning in her work with Find a Grave, honoring the memory of those who had passed by preserving their stories. She also had great joy working with her Petoskey High School class in organizing and planning reunions. She had an amazing memory and a wonderful grasp of history.
