Martha Schneider

Martha Lee Schneider, 83, of Indian River, MI, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025, lovingly surrounded by her children.

Martha was born on December 30, 1941, in Ann Arbor, MI, to Leo and Frances (Bucy) Hoey. She grew up in Dexter, MI, and graduated from Dexter High School in 1960. During her time there, she served as class president and was a proud Dexter Dreadnaught cheerleader—roles that reflected her spirited personality and natural leadership.

After high school, Marty attended St. Lawrence School of Nursing, where she earned her degree and became an RN. Nursing was more than a profession for Marty—it was a calling. She deeply loved her work, forming lasting bonds with both patients and coworkers. Many of her most treasured friendships began during her years of caregiving. Marty served for many years at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility and later at Elk Rapids Family Practice, where she worked until her retirement in 2006. Her dedication, compassion, and steady presence left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

On September 11, 1965, Marty married her high school sweetheart, Bob Schneider. Together they raised four children—Tricia, Terri, Kim, and Bobby—in Dexter and later in Elk Rapids. In 1967, Bob and Marty became foster parents, opening their hearts and home to 15 children over the years. Their household was filled with love, laughter, and the joyful chaos of a big, welcoming family.

Marty’s greatest passion in life was undoubtedly her children and grandchildren. She cherished every holiday, birthday, and special occasion, always going the extra mile to make them magical for those she loved. Her boundless energy and creativity made even the simplest moments memorable. She also enjoyed spending time with her siblings, in-laws, and their children, sharing many wonderful moments on the shores of Torch Lake, at her family's farm in Dexter, or wherever her loved ones gathered.

Affectionately known as “Smart Mart” or “Smarty,” Marty was a true original. She loved giving nicknames, baking, playing jokes, chatting on the phone, snapping pictures, and sharing laughter. She also had an unmatched talent for bargain shopping—proudly refusing to ever pay full price for anything. Her friendships were deeply meaningful and nurtured with the same enthusiasm and care she gave her family.

Marty loved her home on the Sturgeon River, a place that brought her peace and joy. She could often be found relaxing by the river’s edge, mowing her lawn with pride, or creating in the kitchen—making batches of her famous jalapeño jelly, strawberry jam, or delicious Texas sheet cake. Her home was a reflection of who she was: warm, welcoming, and full of life.

Martha is survived by her loving children: Tricia Schneider, Bobby (Maria) Schneider, and Terri (Jason) Vizina. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Lauren Vizina; Amanda, Olivia, Katie, and Molly Monthei; and Kaden, Caleb, Jase, and Mia Schneider. She is also survived by her siblings: Rita (Ted) Barnes, Rosalie (Pat) McCarthy, Dan (Marlene) Hoey, and Burton (Darlene) Hoey.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob Schneider; her cherished daughter, Kim (Scott) Monthei; her parents, Leo and Frances Hoey; her brothers, Allen (Tess) Hoey and Pat Hoey; and her in-laws: Alice Schneider, Ken Schneider, Patrick McCarthy, and Darlene Hoey.

Visitation will be held at 11:00 AM on June 26, 2025, at Cross in the Woods Catholic Church (7078 M-68, Indian River, MI 49749). Funeral Mass will follow at 12:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, please take some time with your family to enjoy a gigantic dessert with plenty of whipped cream. And while you're at it, think of Marty—and say an extra prayer for the day.
