Mary Taggart

Mary A. Taggart, 86, of Cheboygan, passed away Monday, July 15, 2019 at McLaren Hospice House in Cheboygan.

Mary was born August 1, 1932 in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, the daughter of Gustav and Clara (Beine) Schultz.  On October 18, 1952 in San Marino, California, she married James Taggart, who preceded her in death on September 20, 2010. She had worked as a waitress at the Riverside Restaurant and the Step Inn, and later worked for the Cheboygan Public Schools in the cafeteria, retiring in 2003.  She was an avid and vocal Cheboygan Chief’s sports fan, known for her cowbell, and belonged to the “members of the tribe” sports boosters being very involved in their fund raising.  Mary was also a member of St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, and the Red Hat Society, and was active in the Rivertown Follies, and the Northland Players. Most of all, having been orphaned at the age of thirteen, Mary enjoyed family gatherings and meals, and especially being a grandmother.

Surviving are her children, James (Gillian) Taggart and Patrick (Kim) Taggart, both of San Jose, California, Lisa (Steve) Campeau of Cheboygan, and Shelly (Dean) Chase of Howell, five grandchildren, Stephanie (Stephen) Morris of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Kristin (Ed Mellema) Campeau of Grand Rapids, Christopher (Amanda) Taggart of Cleveland, Ohio, and Katie Taggart and Joseph Taggart, both of California, a great grandchild, Jamie Morris, and another arriving soon.

In addition to her husband, Jim, and her parents, she was preceded in death by two infant sons, William and Michael, a great granddaughter, MacKenzie Morris, two sisters, Margaret Schnur and Geraldine Whipkey, and three brothers, Eugene, Melvin, and Donald.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, from 5:00pm-8:00pm, at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan.

The funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at 11:00am, at St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan, with the family greeting friends beginning at 10:00am.  Rev. Duane Wachowiak will officiate, burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Indian River.

Memorials may be made to the McLaren Hospice House in Cheboygan, the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association.
