Maureen Barkley Obituary

Maureen Barkley passed into Heaven on March 10, 2025. Maureen was born Maureen Therese Gallagher on July 7, 1962, in Farmington, Michigan.

In 1971 she moved with her family to Cheboygan, Michigan where she attended the catholic school. She later moved to Harbor Springs where she graduated in 1980. Maureen attended Ferris State University where she studied art. During her time at Ferris, she found her love for the outdoors and rescuing animals. She rescued a crow, named him Goliath and raised him in her dorm room. On March 19, 1988, she married the love of her life, Alan Barkley, and raised four beautiful children.

Maureen loved rescuing dogs and brought a safe and comfortable home to many of them. One of Maureen’s many loves was camping. Her favorite campground was Muskallonge Lake State Park, where she could walk for hours on the beach looking for agates. But really, she was happy with any campground. Maureen enjoyed kayaking and could be found on any of the small lakes and streams in Northern Michigan. She always enjoyed bicycling and participated every year in the Great Cycle Challenge to support childhood cancer research. Maureen worked for Char-Em ISD where she was a Para Professional working with emotionally impaired children. She loved her job and all the children she taught.

Maureen was preceded in death by her parents William and Joan Gallagher of Harbor Springs, Michigan and her brother Jim Gallagher of Roseville, California.

Maureen is survived by her husband of 37 years Alan Barkley; four children: Rhyan (Rachel) Barkley of Kentwood, MI, Justin (Iryna) Barkley of Alanson, MI, Emily (Tyler) Mayer of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and Katie (Chase Massey) of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; grandchildren Theodore Mayer, Clara Mayer, and Tristan Mayer; brothers: Tom (Jaci) Gallagher of Harbor Springs MI, Bill (Elise) Gallagher of Vacaville CA, and Patrick (Denise) Gallagher of Chandler AZ; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her childhood best friend Karen Austin of Orlando, Florida.
