On Wednesday October 7, 2020 Melvin Clifford Howard passed away with his wife of 61 years by his side. He was born to Harold & Helen (Reinhardt) Howard on January 17, 1933 in Boyne Valley Township.
Mel served in the US Navy on the USS Dixie during the Korean War where he received National Defense, Korean Service and United Nations medals. He made a home and started his fuel oil business in Boyne City where he was a successful businessman, owner & operator of Howard’s Oil and Mel’s Friendly Service.
Mel married Nanetta Ethel Fear on August 29, 1959 and was a proud father to Kelly Martin, Kathleen Way and Christian (Gina) Howard. He adored his 5 grandchildren Brandon Looze, Darren (Amanda) Looze, Brady Way, Calvin (Sunny) Howard & Alexa Howard-Brown (Benjamin) and 2 great-grandchildren Christian Martin Howard & Azuriel Catarina Looze.
Mel was a very active community member for several years. He was an original member of the Boyne City Volunteer Fire Department, served on the Boyne City School Board, Charlevoix County Jury Board, Lions Club, was instrumental in the Boyne City Railroad and he was a 32nd degree Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents and son.
