Michael Abbott Obituary

Michael John Abbott, 73, died peacefully at home in Harbor Springs, Michigan on May 1, 2022.

His passing leaves many saddened. Mike loved his family deeply and was a most caring, loyal friend. He was much loved in return.

Mike was born in Flint, Michigan on January 22, 1949, to Joseph and Frances Abbott. He was the youngest of seven children.  He graduated from St. Matthew High School in 1967, playing on State championship football and basketball teams under legendary coach, Jack Pratt. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan - Flint. He also served honorably in the Michigan National Guard.

Mike enjoyed a gratifying career in the food and beverage industry, working proudly at Abbott’s Meats, Tom Ryan Distributing (Anheuser Busch), and Heddy’s Market in Flint, all before moving Up North and becoming owner/operator of a KFC franchise in Petoskey.

Mike married Kathleen Adams in 1967. They were blessed with sons, James Anthony (Jim) in 1967 and Chad Michael in 1971.

Throughout his life Mike braved tragedies and loss, losing his father, Joe, and older brother, Jim, at an early age. He survived a serious auto accident in mid-life. He also lost his beloved Mother, Frances Abbott and siblings, Thomas Abbott, and Ellen Patricia Kelly.

Mike is survived by his wife Kathleen (Kathy), son Jim and his wife Dana of Corona del Mar, CA, their daughters, Madeleine and Ella, and his son Chad of San Francisco, CA and his daughter, Isla. His beautiful granddaughters were precious to him.

He is also survived by siblings, Katie Norris (Mac) of Sarasota, FL, Edward Abbott (Lois) of Fen[1]ton, MI and Betty Abbott of Denver, CO, as well as many nephews, nieces, and their families.

Mike leaves behind too many friends to mention, whose deep connections meant the world to him. He had an ever-present sense of humor and a renowned gift for storytelling.

He also leaves his cherished pet companion, Buster. They were inseparable. Buster was the last in a line of golden retrievers that Mike spoiled with love, each one more than the last.

While Mike was a proud native of Flint, he was drawn from an early age to the shores of Lake Michigan. For the last 22 years of his life, he and his wife lived happily in Harbor Springs. Per his wishes, a private family service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Harbor Springs.

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make donations might give to the Humane Society of their choice.
