Michael Albert Scoggins, 70, of Boyne City, Michigan, passed away on April 18, 2025, at his home with his loving wife by his side.
Michael was born on December 1, 1954, in San Antonio, Texas, to Lowell and Shirley (Morse) Scoggins. He was a God-fearing man. A bible verse that he felt summed up his life was 1 Corinthians 15:10, “By the grace of God I am what I am”.
Michael was born with cerebral palsy, a debilitating neurological disorder affecting body movement and muscle coordination. Growing up, Michael’s mother taught him to defy the odds. She would say, “If I help him every time he needs it, how is he going to learn to stand on his own two feet when I’m not around”. She instilled the belief that he could and would be independent, that failure is a learning experience, a part of life, not something to fear. She was his biggest advocate and got him into a school setting during a time when there was no specialized schooling, and we did not have the advancements that we have today. In time, Michael would go on to graduate from high school and attend college at Saginaw Valley State University, making lifelong friends along the way and working throughout. Through hard work and the grace of God, Michael would continue to defy the odds throughout his life.
After SVSU, Michael worked as a house aid and other jobs caring for others. Michael had a kind heart. He was forever grateful for the people and events God placed in his life. Michael gave all credit to God for becoming the man he was and wanted people to know that God has a plan for you, too. He would always say that God has never failed him.
On August 20, 2016, Michael married his wife Anneke. He was completely in love. He would talk about when they first met, and they couldn’t spend enough time with each other. He would say how nice it is to be married to your best friend. There is no question God placed them in each other’s life.
Michael was an avid sports fan. Although, no sport was closer to his heart than baseball. He was a diehard Tigers fan and would get choked up talking about how his mother took him and his brother to a Tigers World Series game in 1984. He loved to learn, he was an avid reader, and he enjoyed conversing with people from every walk of life.
Michael was part of a peaceful protest in Lansing regarding the passage of the ADA or the Americans with Disabilities Act which would eventually be signed into law in 1990 by Bush Sr. prohibiting discrimination based on disability and helping to bring the disabled into the 21st century. In addition, he served on the Board of Cerebral Palsy, he would volunteer with ARC, he was involved in the re-elect Obama campaign, and was proud to have won the Volunteer Extraordinaire Award from the Democratic party.
Michael is survived by his wife Anneke; father-in-law Jock; mother-in-law Marilyn; brothers-in-law Ken and Matt; sisters-in-law Megan and Kelly; nephews Corbin, Kurtis, and Jackson; nieces Mackenzie, Loagen, and Addisen.
He is preceded in death by his father Lowell; mother Shirley; brother Bruce; and sister-in-law Julie.
Those wishing to make a charitable donation in Michael’s memory are asked to consider McLaren Hospice.
A memorial service for Michael will be on May 3, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Bella Vita. It will be a time to share memories and celebrate his wonderful life.
Michael wanted to leave you with a bible verse, from 2 Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
Arrangements are in the care of Stackus Funeral Home.
