Michael "Mike" Thomas Obituary

Michael J. Thomas, 59 of Petoskey died February 27, 2026 at the McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

Michael, more commonly known as Mike, was born on July 5, 1966 in Detroit, MI, son of the late James and Susan (Harnden) Thomas.  Michael was raised in Detroit until the age of 7 when he and his family moved to Petoskey, where he attended St. Francis through middle school and graduated from Petoskey High School with the Class of 1984. He then attended Motech Automotive Education Center.

On July 30, 1994, Mike married the love of his life, Anita (Lutz) Thomas, and together they made their home in Petoskey where they later welcomed their daughter Bailey. Michael also owned and operated the Sweep Shop in which he took great pride in.

One of Mike's greatest joys was riding his Harley. Whether it be a quick cruise around town, or long trips he was just happy to ride. He was known as a jack of all trades, to include but not limited to, his woodworking and ability to fix almost anything. He also became small town famous for his Light Up Petoskey Show, a listen along Christmas music and lightshow. He spent numerous hours perfecting the show for the whole community to enjoy. Mike was an avid Lions fan, his faith in them remained unwavering right through their recent comeback! He always looked forward to cruises with his parents and siblings, bonfires with his in-laws, and of course his annual birthday bash over the 4th of July where he always put on the best firework show.

Although he loved and took pride in a great many things, he most loved being a Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, and Uncle. There's nothing he wouldn't do for his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Anita; daughter and son-in-law, Bailey and Jeremiah Weld; 3 grandchildren, Gannon, Colton, and Madilynn Weld; 3 siblings, Susan (Sean) Martin, Laurie McKenzie, and Jim (Dotti) Thomas; as well by many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Michael’s life will be held at a later date.
