Paul Stanley Obituary

Paul Harvey Stanley died Thursday, June 27, at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey, a month to the day after his 94th birthday.

He was born May 27, 1925, to Clarence and Evelyn (Burrows) Stanley in Hammond, IN.

He was raised in Petoskey and Harbor Springs and was a member of the Harbor Springs High School class of 1944. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in August of 1943 and saw action in the Pacific Theater.

After he returned home, he married the love of his life, Enola Therese Elder, on Sept. 27, 1947. She preceded him in death on March 5, 2017 after nearly 70 years of marriage.

He worked several jobs in Harbor Springs, the longest at Ottawa Lumber Co. at the end of Main Street, where for the past couple of years, he lived in Hillside Apartments about where the lumber yard used to be.

Paul and Enola were great sports fans, always in attendance at Ram games, especially basketball. For many years he was on the “chain gang” at home football games, through nice weather, rain and sometimes snow.

He was an avid golfer with a group of Harbor Springs guys, finally giving it up when the old knees just couldn’t handle it any more. There are very few golf courses in Northern Michigan that he didn’t play, and some, like all golfers, he didn’t like to play.

He loved to play cards, especially cribbage. Many a winter night was spent at the Legion hall playing cribbage but he was also a very, very good euchre and pinochle player as well. You wanted him to be your partner and not your opponent! Special thanks to Martin Breighner and Harry Boyer for keeping him in the game the past couple of years.

He was a history buff who loved to pull out the Harbor Springs centennial yearbook to make sure he had someone’s graduation date just right, or to haul out the Stanley, Burrows and Jodeway family histories done by his brother, Bob, when family questions arose.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Enola, father and mother, step-mother Ruby, brothers Edward and Robert, step-sisters and step-brother Madeline, Betty and Fred Burrows.

He is survived by three children, Kendall (Diana) Stanley of Petoskey, Darcy Stanley of St. Clair Shores, Doran (Joanne) Stanley of Alanson; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a myriad of nieces and nephews, especially the Sandersons – Mike, Chris, Brian and Jeff, who’ve lost their parents and now their Aunt Loda and Uncle Paul -- and many friends.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 5, at Holy Childhood of Christ Catholic Church in Harbor Springs. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will take place at the Holy Childhood Cemetery in Harbor Springs.

Those wishing to honor Paul’s memory are asked to make a donation to Hiland Cottage or a charity of their own choice in his name.
