Our sincere condolences to the family of Packi. I (Dave Genevich) was a chauffer for Packi on his many visits to Chicago. His sincere friendship was extended on my trips to Catalina. He made my wife and I feel welcome by his friendly manner. His passing is a tremendous loss for many people.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Offield family during this difficult time. We first met Packy at the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in 2009 where The Great Marlin Race was first launched. This cutting edge citizen science program would most-likely never have achieved its current success were it not for Packy's interest and support. Thank you Packy. You will be sorely missed.by all who had the distinct pleasure of knowing you.

Message from The Propst family
June 30, 2015 7:08 PM

The Propst family sends our condolences to Packy's family. Packy worked for dad (Doug Propst) one summer at Middle Ranch, on some special projects. Later dad enjoyed working with Packy through SCI, Co. and in getting the Catalina Conservancy going. Dad really appreciated Packy's early commitment toward Conservancy goals. Packy was truly a great guy. We are sorry for your loss.

I worked at SCI Co. in the 80's with Packy, first on the pleasure boats and then in the accounting dept.and to this day I am deeply grateful for the experience . He was a gracious and kind man and boss who always treated me well and made me feel part of his extended SCI family. Having stayed in touch with Packy over the years, (he even took my call in his office after Avalon had been evacuated during the fire of 2007 and patiently filled me in on the situation) I feel we've lost a truly great man and Catalina Island has lost it's best friend.

I am so saddened to hear of Packy's death, and send my wishes for peace to Susan, their children and grandchildren, and all who loved him. I knew Packy through his gifts to Hazelden and his generous contributions to CHOICES. Countless young people's lives have been enriched through this youth-serving organization on Catalina Island. His heart was as big as the universe, and we all are better for knowing him.

Packy will be greatly missed by his friends at The Peregrine Fund. He is fondly remembered for his sage counsel, generosity, shared passion for sailing and fishing, and his subtle humor. His considerable influence ranged broadly from sound business management to supporting conservation research and student training in places that ranged from the Galapagos, Panama and Cameroon in the tropics, to Greenland and Alaska in the Arctic. We were privileged to know him and honored to have him as a Director and former Chairman of the Board. We will be forever grateful for his good-natured thoughtfulness as he helped guide the organization.

We are so sorry for your loss. I was really hoping to meet Packy this year, since I never had that honor. The impact he had on our scholarly and educational program work was significant, and we are just about to complete the website project he and you helped to fund... and a site that will serve thousands of boaters, divers, lovers of the Great Lakes and real and armchair maritime historians or underwater archaeologists, alike. You are in our thoughts and prayers, and have our gratitude, as well. Rolf Johnson, CEO

I remember the day Packy arrived with me at the Catalina Island School in the fall of 1968. We were both on the same Grumman Goose Seaplane. It was our first meeting and the beginning of our friendship. Years later in 1987 he asked me to help with the Island Company's Insurance and our Company did so for some 22 years . We experienced much together including the devastating Catalina Fires. Most recently I have had the honor to help with some of his Risk Management. Through the years I have experienced his great Stewardship and Leadership . But more importantly I have cherished his Trust in me and our lifelong friendship.

The following speaks volumes about the kind of man Packy was. While living in Avalon Packy used to like our dad Buzzy for some reason & would be Buzzy''s mentor at times while playing golf when Dad could no longer see very well & had tremors when Dad was in his early 80's. Packy was a man of the people & for the people.....Thank you Paxson for your kindness to the world. .... Our sincere condolences to the family..

I worked at The SCI co. when Packy was there. I was in a room in the back of the building where the bosses usually did not go. One Sunday, while working, Packy came in with three framed pictures of wolves for me. He had heard that saving them was my passion and he thought that I would enjoy them. That was such a kind thing for him to do and I will never forget it. I will miss him and his thoughtfulness.
