Peter M. Sears

Peter M. Sears, 85 of Harbor Springs, Michigan passed away in Harbor Springs  surrounded by his family on November 12, 2021.

Son of Harold and Eleanor (Bissell), Peter was born on November 21, 1935 in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. Peter attended Cranbrook Academy and graduated from East Grand Rapids High School in 1955, and then The Hill School in 1956. He attended Northwestern University, ultimately earning a degree from Southern Methodist University.

Peter was a veteran and served in the US Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Peter started his professional career working at Bissell, Inc. as a 4th generation Bissell family member in 1961 and retired as a member of the Board of Directors in 2011.

Over the years Peter spent much time doing volunteer work. He volunteered on the East Grand Rapids Planning Commission, Harbor Springs Planning Commission, SCORE, and various other committees. He also started the Harbor Springs New Years Day Run with Gow Litzenburger and started the East Grand Rapids New Years Day Resolution Run.

Peter enjoyed boating the great lakes… TIARA Yachts, tried and true. He also loved hunting, horseback riding, fishing, and 1800. His favorite places were Harbor Springs, Michigan and Palm Springs, California. Peter also enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and he ran the Olympic torch twice.

Peter was a member of the University Club, Kinne Creek Association, Smoke Tree Ranch and Mackinac Island Yacht Club.  Additionally, he was a former 110 sailor (and member) of legendary proportion at Macatawa Bay Yacht Club.

Peter is survived by his wife Anne (Rocker) Sears; his sons Robert (Julie) Sears and James (Deb) Sears; his step-children: Deanna (Frank) Laboy and Jayne (Matt) Bugera; his grandchildren: Rachel, Sophie, Sam, Hayden and Parker Sears; his four step-grandchildren; and his four step-great-grandchildren, and his sister Tamsen Roach.

In lieu of flowers, Peter had requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

A memorial service for Peter will be at the First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Springs on November 20, 2021 at 11:00 AM. A visitation will begin at 10:00 AM and burial will follow the service at Lakeview Cemetery.
