Phillip B. LaRose, 75, of Indian River, MI, passed away on August 8th, 2025, at
McLaren Hospital in Petoskey, MI. Though his passing leaves a gentle emptiness in the
hearts of those who knew him, his spirit endures in the memories, stories, and love he
shared across a lifetime.
He was born on January 26th, 1950, son of James and Virginia (Gumtow) LaRose in
Kalamazoo, MI. Phil grew up in Richland, MI where he attended Gull Lake Schools from
which he was a graduate with the class of 1968. After graduating he went on to join the
military. He had enlisted for a short while and moved on to working at the Fisher Body
Plant in Kalamazoo where he was employed for nine years.
After retiring from The Fisher Body Plant, Phil embarked on a new adventure—owning
and operating his own bait and tackle shop. It was more than a business; it was an
extension of one of his lifelong passions, fishing. He crafted his own rods and reels,
taking pride in every detail and sharing his enthusiasm with customers and friends alike.
The hum of conversation in the shop often centered on tales of the water, and
techniques, and talk of their boats.
A few years later, he met his wife Dawn and they moved to Indian River, MI. Embracing
this new chapter, Phil found his calling as a Licensed Boat Technician at Burt Lake
Marina where he worked for many years, then he went on to work at Indian River
Marina.
Phil’s warmth was felt by all who crossed his path; truly he was a friend to everyone. In
his younger years the allure of Harley Davidsons called him. He reveled in the freedom
and the fellowship of other riders, forging bonds and memories. As the years passed,
his passion shifted to the tranquility and adventure of boats. Whether sharing fishing
stories or solving a technical challenge, Phil found purpose and happiness in each
vessel he sailed or serviced.
Throughout his career, he was known for his tireless work ethic and unwavering
integrity. No task was ever too small or too challenging; he took pride in every job well
done and inspired those around him with his commitment and reliability.
His customers were not just customers to Phil; they were his friends. He went out of his
way to check on them as they did the same for him. Those who knew him were
welcomed by his strong sense of comradery. He was truly one of the “Good ole’ Boys.”
Let us honor his life by carrying forward his example by working hard, caring deeply,
being kind to one another and making time for laughter and friendship. May his memory
be a source of strength, unity, and hope for us all.
Phillip is preceded in death by his Mother and Father Virginia and James LaRose, and
his brother John LaRose.
He is survived by his loving wife Dawn LaRose, Son Chad LaRose, Sheri Parker
(Tim), Todd Remeur (Teresa), Mark Remeur (Shirley), Lorrie Fisher (Doug), Matt
Remeur (Terri). Nephews Scott LaRose (Toni), Mike LaRose (Darcy), Joe Sikema (Kim),
