Rhonda Shalifoe, age 63, walked on November 12, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Rhonda was born on January 23, 1962, the daughter of Robert “Bob” Hinmon and Marian (Shenoskey) Taylor. She was born in Kalkaska, Michigan, and spent her childhood and young adult years living throughout the state, including in Sault Ste. Marie, Escanaba, Grand Rapids, Manistee, and Charlevoix, among others.
Rhonda worked in housekeeping at the Odawa Casino for much of her career, but her true calling was as a caretaker and mother. Known as the “community mom,” Rhonda opened her heart and her home to anyone in need. She would feed, shelter, and care for countless children over the years, in addition to raising her own six children. The number of unofficially adopted kids she helped along the way is too many to count. She was the matriarch of her family, much like her mother before her.
Rhonda was a citizen of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians and proud of her tribal heritage. She loved taking her children to powwows across Michigan, where she participated in dances, braided hair, and shared her famous frybread. The Shalifoe family food stand even won first place in a frybread contest one year, a point of great pride for her.
Rhonda had a deep love of music, enjoying everything from Patsy Cline to Led Zeppelin. She was a warm, caring, and spirited woman who could make anyone laugh. Her kindness, humor, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Rhonda is survived by her children Daniel Hinmon, Annette Shalifoe (Paul Ford), Rhonda S. Shalifoe, Roger Shalifoe III (Kim Smith), Roberta Shalifoe, and Amy Shalifoe; grandchildren Nathaniel Beltran, Tristan Beltran, Aaiyana Beltran, Domanic Ford, Nevaeh Smith, Noah Smith-Shalifoe, Landon Nimkii DeBois, Ashdan Hinmon, Tobias Hinmon, Aurora Hinmon, Taden Shalifoe, Tegan Shalifoe, and Thomas Shalifoe; siblings Ben, Roberta, John, Eva and Merry Hinmon; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her grandson Jayce Heron-Hinmon; parents Bob Hinmon, and Marian and Lon Taylor; and siblings Robert Hinmon, David Hinmon, Bearnice Hinmon, and Diana Peltier.
There will be a funeral service on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with an hour of visitation prior to the service, at Stone Funeral Home (2098 E. Mitchell Rd. Petoskey, MI 49770).
